The Thrashers ~ Julie Soto

Jodi Dillon was never meant to be one of them. Julian, Lucy, Paige, and the infamous Zack Thrasher are rich, sophisticated, and love attention. Jodi feels out of place, but Zack’s her childhood best friend, so she’s in.

Then Emily Mills, who desperately wanted to be a Thrasher, dies—and the whispers about the Thrashers begin. As Emily’s journal surfaces, detectives close in, and Jodi faces an impossible choice: betray her friends or protect herself.

But as eerie messages and strange occurrences escalate, it becomes clear—Emily isn’t done with them yet.

Oh wow am I ever happy that the internet was barely a thing when I was in high school. Yes, I just aged myself. I think I got an email address in grade 9? It was painful to check because dial up was a thing and nobody could keep themselves from picking up the phone for 20 minutes.

This was such a well written book about what it feels like to be in school with people who you’re not really sure are your true friends but you are desperate to stay connected with them. I think that even as adults we sometimes face these same fears. “Are my mom friends going out for mimosas without me cause I said something stupid at the playground?” I don’t think we ever really grow out of our insecurities, they just shift in our lives as we age.

Jodi is a really refreshing character in the sense that she realises the mistakes that were made and attempts to fix them. She is your typical high school girl, she does dumb things and doesn’t even notice the pain she leaves in her wake, but once she’s had it brought to her attention she really does try to do the right thing.

I loved the hints of a ghost story. Is Emily really trying to reach The Thrashers from beyond the grave? Or was their guilt for being shitty people getting to them?

Oh Julian…. I need more. That’s all. He’s every boy I ever loved. A little bit mean and completely out of my league.
