I was able to listen to The House of my Mother via audiobook on Spotify and it was so powerful to listen to the author reading the words of her own story. I am blown away by her bravery and strength in sharing her story and bringing to light the type of abuse that children can suffer under the hands of parents who are looking for fame and fortune.
Shari’s voice describes her life before the youtube stardom that disrupted her family life, the way that her mother, Ruby, ironed their family as a general and expected her small children to fall into an orderly line. She talks about the way that the 8 Passengers youtube channel created an even more toxic home life leaving Shari ripe for a predator to press his way into her life and groom her. My heart breaks for this young woman and all that she has had to go through in her short life and I hope she finds peace and joy moving forward.
I grew up in the same religion as Shari and for those of you who have also left, this book is not overly preachy or pushing any sort of agenda. Shari uses very broad language about the church teachings and non-members and members alike will understand very clearly the impact her religious community had on her.
