Second Mona Awad book this year and had another WTF did I just read moment? Has anyone laid eyes on Mona Awad? Is she okay?
Samantha is a gifted writer who is attending Warren* University, a prestigious ivy league college where the cream of the crop attend to work on their groundbreaking art.
*war·ren
/ˈwôrən/
noun
- a network of interconnecting rabbit burrows.
Several other reviews speculate that Warren is loosely based on Brown University where Mona Awad attended, and the dark academia vibes are absolutely dripping from Bunny.
As I was reading Bunny there are a lot of warning signs that Samantha is delving a little too deep into her work and forgetting that there is a real world around her. Her best friend Ava who has an other worldly coolness is the perfect juxtaposition to the Bunnies who are childish women clad in pastel dresses consuming their own bodyweight in sugar.
***************** SPOILER ALERT ***********************
Samantha sitting on the bus as the old woman with the spider tattoo (Samantha’s phobia) is reading out the “menu of schizophrenia” and of course, that is when Max appears behind her. I personally interpreted Ava as the desire for Samantha to have a home, a place of belonging, love and acceptance. Where Max seemed to house her fear, anger and constant confusion at where she actually fit in.
What were the Bunnies doing? Conjuring actual magic? Getting swept away in the madness that Samantha created? I love how we actually cannot know as Samantha is probably the perfect example of an unreliable narrator.
There is a lot of gore and violence in this book so go into it with your eyes open and hold tight to you axe handle.
