The Last Murder at the End of the World ~ Stuart Turton

I still think about The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle quite often, to the point that I want to reread it with the knowledge that you gain at the end of the book, so when a friend suggested a buddy read of Stuart Turton’s new book, of course I was game!

It is a post apocalyptic future and our characters are living on an island as the last of humanity after surviving a black fog that destroyed everything in its path. Our villagers work hard and have joy in their day to day lives as they are led by their Elders who were around when the world ended. They have taught the villages how to survive and grow their food, and celebrate the small joys.

It is quickly shown that these people are very different from you and I and I was immediately engrossed in how just very different they are. When someone dies unexpectedly, Emory who has been full of questions without answers her entire life, is put in charge of solving murder and saving the last of the world.

There are some crazy puzzles in this book and so many interesting twists of how people have survived after the end of the world. The technology that they use and the way that they maintain balance is such an intriguing concept. I won’t give any spoilers but wow, it’s so wild.

What makes us human? What is it that sets us apart? If the end of the world came would we take care of those around us or would we shove them under our feet to climb higher to get to safety?

I highly suggest picking this one up because once again Turton has written a book that I will be thinking about for a long time.
