This was my online bookclub’s pick for the month of March and wow – what an incredible story.

I rarely listen to audiobooks as I am usually doing something else at the same time and lose track of the story, but with Viola Davis reading her own book, I was completely sucked into her words and her voice.

A powerful story of survival, endurance and grit, Viola does not hold back on the abuse and suffering she experienced as a Black child. Her ability to bring you right into that dark cold room listening to the rats with her is such an amazing experience. She talks about being passed over due to her dark skin, her fight to be cast even after having successful roles and always being such a strength for her family.

I loved this book and I loved how it once again made me sit in my discomfort about how we glorify paler skinned women on the screen and don’t think twice about the black women who are constantly the quirky friend character, the mother, the junkie. I loved How To Get Away With Murder and listening to how she fought for that character to be sexy, raw and real made me appreciate her acting even more.
