The Last One by Will Dean was riveting. I could not put it down. I was flying through chapter after chapter completely invested in Caz, who wakes up on the first morning on a massive cruise ship only to find she is completely alone. Where are the rest of the passengers? Where is the crew? This psychological thriller had me completely sucked in.
I don’t want to give away any of the plot points so please stop here if you haven’t read it yet.
Okay
What the $%&#?!?!?!? This book is a combination of The Hunger Games mixed with Squid Game. The level of depravity of some of the tasks made me feel queasy. I already had a healthy fear of the open ocean but this book solidified the fact that I will NEVER set foot on a cruise ship in my life.
I think that this book does such a great job at showcasing our lack of humanity when we watch entertainment. Yes, Squid Game is a fictional world, but we were still all glued to our tv’s to see what on earth would unfold in the next episode. Our news programs are nightmare fuel and we just continue on in the world without a second thought. The reality is that this type of show could be made and people would actually pay to watch it.
I was fully in until the big reveal. I was actually kind of angry after the winner was declared and everything came to light. The anger then turned into full out rage on the last page of the book. Is that what makes it great? The fact it created real emotions and made me think? Probably.
I do suggest this book, as it is incredibly thought provoking and thrilling. Just be warned, you will probably want to throw it across the room when you finish it.
I borrowed my copy from my local library. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
