Black Sheep ~ Rachel Harrison

This book is actually brilliant. I could not put it down. I got Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison from the library and read it in less than 24 hours. It was that great.

This book starts off with a young woman, Vesper Wright, who has turned her back on her religious community that raised her and is living off in the real world, suffering through being a waitress, which if you know, can be a special kind of hell. She gets home from work and finds an envelope on her doorstep inviting her home to her best friend’s wedding. Who is she marrying? Vesper’s first and only love of course. Off Vesper goes to the wedding with a revenger dress in her bag.

I loved the writing in this book so much. It’s clever, witty and sarcastic. We are inside Vesper’s head with all her annoyance and frustration. What we learn about her family is such a twisted bomb I audibly gasped. Such a fun and spooky story without being too terrifying.

I think that at the end of the book you learn that it doesn’t really matter how you were raised or what you believe, walking away can leave battle scars and we have to take care of ourselves (and seek therapy, lots of therapy)
