The Mask of Onyx ~ Nikki Waskowski

This book had me at dark academia and magic.
Amanda has left the Academy where she learned the theory behind her Ghoster magic, but she’s really fine with living a normal life, playing in her band and figuring out her future. That is until her best friend disappears and she has to follow behind him.

The magic system is a LOT to keep straight. The names of the classifications, the different types of magic, who can do what, it got to be very confusing at points, but I could not put the book down. I just had to find out what was going on and if Amanda would be able to rise up and unleash her magic in the real world outside of a classroom.

The characters are great, there are UNICORNS, there is humour and fun moments and I will be looking forward to the next book to see what happens to them all next.

There’s a few continuity issues and some grammatical errors that I found, but not enough to stop me from reading the book (for example when we meet Matt he has dark brown hair but at the end it talks about his auburn hair) – just things that I notice as I also take on a lot of Beta reading and editing projects. Honestly, most people wouldn’t even pick up on most of it.
